"Business-related internet sites in Australia have doubled in the past twelve months, according to a federal government report, stats:Electronic Commerce in Australia.

It is the first statistical report covering business on the internet in Australia, and shows there are at least 54 800 business sites. It also shows that in 1997 there were 1.5 billion electronic transactions made to a value of $16 trillion worldwide.

Other highlights of the survey include

• 11 per cent of all businesses have a Web site
• 35 per cent of businesses with a web site claimed it had significant effect on business
• By the end of this year, most of the top 1000 businesses will have online presence
• Nearly $4 million was spent on online advertising in 1997. This is expected to triple in 1998
• By February 1998, there were approximately one million Australians over the age of eighteen accessing the internet from home
• Over the twelve months leading to February 1998, 1.3 million Australians made the connection from work, 1.5 million from other locations (such as libraries, internet kiosks, etc.) and 1 million dialling up from home."
