Mauritian born singer-
composer living in Paris, has been since the 7O's,
one of
the true ambassadors of Mauritian music. |
|
Clarel Betsy has released eleven albums, fifty five singles, '(45 t RPM)',
CD's in France, UK, USA, Brazil, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Canada, Mauritius.
Has appeared on numerous TV shows and France. Namely, "Numéro Un", "Grand
Echiquier", "A Bout Portant", "Midi Première", "L'Eté En Tubes", "L'Echo des
Bananes"....and regional TV's, France Inter, RTL, Europe 1, Radio
Luxembourg, BBC, Radio Sweden, Voice Of America, Radio France International,
Radio Monte Carlo, Africa No.1. Performed twice at the famous Paris Olympia
music hall. |
In July, 1971, Clarel Betsy flew to Paris on his own. His cousin, already
working in the French capital, took care of him for a while. The Mauritian
singer started to establish musical contacts. He stayed in the UK for a
while with an English couple; musicians he met previously in Mauritius. They were
Gillian, a brilliant pianist and her husband Anton. The latter was a sound
engineer at London's Olympic Sound Studios, one of Britain's top recording
studios. Anton and Gillian, not ignoring Clarel's tatents, proposed him to
stay with them in Barnes.
| That was Clarel's luck: From time to time, he
accompanied the couple in the studios, learned about recording techniques.
Through them, he recorded top quality demos. The three wrote together. He
got lucky. At the Olympic Sound Studios, he met with top stars recording in
Studios 1 and 2. Among them were Paul, Linda Mc Cartney and Wings, Stevie
Wonder, Cat Stevens, The Small Faces, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie
Vartan, Eddy Mitchell, The Rolling Stones....Who could ask for more......?
At the same time, Clarel was drumming with a band, at "The Stable" night
club in Cromwell Road, London. It was the Carnaby Street trendy period.

Clarel's two most popular songs are "Ti Frere" and "Amélie".
"Ti Frère" has been played and sung world wide. While
Jacques Brel was heading on his
sailing boat, the "Askoy" for his last destination in the Iles Marquises
where he is buried alongside Paul Gauguin, he hears Clarel's song "Ti
Frere" dedicated to Alphonse Ravaton, broadcasted by Radio France
International. Brel falls in love with the song, writes to the French
Radio to have Betsy's address. He gets a copy of the single back. It
followed then that Clarel
Betsy met with his last companion Maddly, who will record a French
version of "Ti Frere" and "Amelie", with Clarel, dedicated to a "friend
of the Iles Marquises". Maddly wrote the French lyrics. In September
2004, Maddly flew to Mauritius to sing the songs with Clarel and tell
this beautiful story to the Mauritian people. |
 |
| In 1985, Paul Anka's manager during Paul
Anka's visit in France, asked Clarel to assist him in contacting the French Minister Of Culture, Jack Lang
to bestow an honour to Paul Anka for making "My Way" (originally
written by Claude Francois) world famous. The Minister agreed
to Betsy's demand.
